Why This Matters
Urban residents experience high levels of stress, screen fatigue, and disconnection from nature. Plants are proven to support wellbeing, yet access to greenery is uneven and often treated as a luxury rather than a daily necessity. At the same time, vending machines are already embedded in public spaces but are largely used to dispense disposable, low-value products. Sprinkl reframes everyday infrastructure as an opportunity to support wellbeing and sustainability.
Sprinkl
Sprinkl is a smart plant vending machine and companion app designed to make plant ownership simple, accessible, and stress-free. By combining guided plant selection, clear care information, and ongoing support, Sprinkl helps people confidently bring greenery into their everyday spaces. The system reimagines everyday infrastructure as a source of wellbeing, making it easy to grow something good without the pressure.
Problem Statement
Urban living and busy lifestyles create significant friction when it comes to plant ownership. While many people want to incorporate plants into their homes, workplaces, or daily environments, they are often held back by uncertainty around which plant to choose, limited store hours that don’t align with their schedules, and a fear of killing the plant due to lack of knowledge or confidence. Access is also a barrier, particularly in dense urban settings such as train stations, university campuses, and office buildings where traditional plant retailers are rarely present. At the same time, indoor plants are widely recognised for their positive impact on wellbeing, and cities are increasingly prioritising sustainability and biophilic design. Despite this, vending machines—already embedded in everyday urban life are largely used to dispense convenience food rather than meaningful, life-enhancing products. A plant vending machine presents an opportunity to remove these barriers by combining accessibility, education, and thoughtful design, making greenery as easy to access as grabbing a snack.

Mockup
The machine uses a clean, modern form with soft edges and natural colours. Plants are clearly visible behind glass to build trust in quality. The dispensing area is well-lit and slow-release to prevent damage. Height and reach considerations ensure accessibility for a wide range of users.

Final Design
Sprinkl demonstrates how existing urban infrastructure can be reimagined to support wellbeing, sustainability, and calm moments in everyday life. By removing friction and fear from plant ownership, Sprinkl makes greenery accessible one small plant at a time.

The Sprinkl app is built to remove uncertainty from plant ownership through clear guidance, friendly language, and a calm visual system. Rather than presenting endless options, the app asks a small number of simple questions and delivers confident recommendations tailored to the user’s space and lifestyle. Post-purchase support such as care reminders, short videos, and “revive my plant” tips ensures the experience extends beyond the point of sale, helping users build confidence over time.
Designing for People and the Planet
Together, the Sprinkl app, vending machine, and location strategy form a cohesive ecosystem that supports wellbeing, sustainability, and everyday connection to nature. By meeting users where they already are and guiding them with clarity and care, Sprinkl transforms plant ownership into a low-pressure, environmentally conscious experience. The project demonstrates how thoughtful interaction design can reimagine familiar infrastructure to create small but meaningful positive change in urban life.
Sprinkl is designed with the goal of making plant ownership approachable, sustainable, and genuinely supportive. The app reduces anxiety by guiding users through simple choices, offering reassurance rather than information overload, and supporting long-term care through reminders and educational content. The vending machine extends this philosophy into physical space, providing easy access to plants in everyday environments while encouraging mindful, lasting ownership rather than impulse consumption.
From a sustainability perspective, Sprinkl prioritises low-impact design. Machines are built using durable, recyclable materials and energy-efficient systems, including low-power LED grow lights, smart climate controls, and motion-activated displays to minimise energy use. Plants are locally sourced wherever possible, packaging is compostable or reusable, and the system is designed to reduce waste by supporting plant longevity rather than replacement.
